THE DRINK, June’s newest short story

TheDrink_090424.jpg

Read June’s story in A Thin Slice of Anxiety.

A variation on the noir love triangle,  “The Drink” is about a beautiful teenage girl in 1970s Upstate New York who is picked up by a predatory  truck driver on her walk home from school. After they move in together and he is abusive, she finds a way to get even.

But see how fast their relationship turns sour:

“I know. I know. Things are tough right now. But just gimme a little more time, and our luck will change. You’ll see. Once I pay off that cop in Nashville, I’ll be able to get another trucking job, and everything will be right with us again.”

“You keep saying that, but why the hell did you have to go and bust his head anyway?”

“Hey, quit squeezing my balls, will you? Like I keep telling you, it just happened.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. You and your barroom brawls.” I let out an extravagant sigh, knowing what his doofus brain didn’t, that he’d never get ahead of that beef.

Enjoy the fun of a noir story as we watch greed, lust, alienation, and jealousy propel morally flawed characters toward their doom. And the best part is the story is free online for everyone to read. Just click here.

BlackSheep_082824.jpg

Look for June’s story “The Betrothal” in the February 2025 issue of Black Sheep: Unique Tales of Terror and Wonder.

“The Betrothal”, set in first century CE Roman-occupied Alexandria, is about a young woman who disappears just before her betrothal to her father’s repulsive but wealthy business partner. The father comes to Miriam bat Isaac looking for help to find his daughter. Aside from her physical features, he describes the unique necklace she likely would be wearing.

Weeks later, through a chance encounter with a woman wearing that unique necklace, Miriam traces the young woman to a ship bound for Ephesus. And, at about the same time, Miriam’s husband, the jeweler who made the necklace, tells Miriam that the old man was recently killed in a sleazy waterfront inn.

Could the young woman have killed him?

If you cannot help Miriam solve the murder, then at least accompany her on her high-stakes search for the young woman.
