In “The Bodyguard”, a story in The Deadliest Returns, Professor Jason asks Miriam to help him solve the drowning death of his old friend, a retired Roman Legionnaire who chose to retire on Lake Mareotis. He tells Miriam his story as he uncrosses his legs like the blades of a scissors and leans forward:
When a maid noticed yesterday that my friend hadn’t appeared for his noon meal, she sent the bearers to look for him, first on the estate and then along the lake. That’s where Quintus lives. I mean lived. Where he took his morning swim. When the bearers saw his body floating in the lake, one of them went to the magistrate, who sent a soldier to fish him out and then notified me. The soldier reported it as a death by drowning. Of course, I’ll do the autopsy this afternoon to determine the definitive cause of death. My friend was a great athlete and fine swimmer even as a boy. So, I knew he couldn’t have simply drowned. Sure enough, when I did an onsite examination, I saw the fracture in his left sphenoid bone.
Who would dare kill an honorable old soldier? Surely someone who must have known the property and his routine. Enlist as Miriam’s deputy and find out. Just click here.
